Sonae Arauco and SUSBOARD: pioneering solutions to reduce scope 3 emissions
Sonae Arauco is part of SUSBOARD, an EU-funded Horizon Europe project with a total budget of €6.9 million, aiming to develop 100% bio-based, formaldehyde-free, and cost-competitive adhesive for particleboard (PB) and medium-density fibreboard (MDF). This breakthrough will enable safer and more sustainable furniture solutions, aligned with the EU Green Deal and Circular Economy goals.
Connecting innovation to climate action
Sonae Arauco’s involvement in SUSBOARD is also a key enabler of our decarbonization strategy. Adhesives and chemicals represent a significant share of our Scope 3 emissions, which account for approximately 82% of our total GHG footprint. By supporting the development of bio-based adhesives, we are actively searching for solutions to reduce emissions across our value chain.
This initiative complements the progress already achieved: since 2019, Sonae Arauco has reduced total GHG emissions by 41%, including a 39% reduction in Scope 3 emissions, thanks to collaborative work with suppliers and circular economy strategies. Our commitment remains ambitious: a 58.8% reduction by 2033, in line with the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal.
Why It matters
SUSBOARD represents a tangible step toward a future where renewable materials replace fossil-based inputs, reinforcing our sustainability goals and helping our customers access greener and affordable products. By investing in innovation today, we are shaping a low-carbon tomorrow.
Driving a low-carbon future
SUSBOARD is a collaborative effort bringing together leading companies and research institutes across Europe. Over the next four years, the project will scale up production, test industrial applications, and accelerate the transition to bio-based materials—helping us deliver safer, greener products for our customers and a more sustainable future for all.
