Sonae Arauco develops new generation of MDF combining recycled wood fibre and renewable resin
Sonae Arauco is presenting today, in Italy, an innovative recycled MDF panel with non-fossil resin, in the context of the wood-based solutions industry. BioReFiber X is a circular economy solution that incorporates recycled MDF fibres and biomass-balanced resin, replacing fossil raw materials with renewable raw materials, enabling CO2 emissions to be reduced by up to 25%
The new solution will be produced in Portugal, at the Mangualde plant, and will be available in the second quarter of 2026. The pre-launch of this innovation will take place at SICAM, a leading international trade fair for accessories and semi-finished products for the furniture industry, which will be held from 14 to 17 October in Pordenone.
Adelaide Alves, Group R&D and Product Development Director at Sonae Arauco, says: "The development of this new product represents a balance between innovation and sustainability, which are priorities for Sonae Arauco. We believe that the future of the industry lies in creating high-quality solutions that meet customer needs, but also respect the principles of the circular economy and the limits of the planet. BioReFiber X meets all these requirements by combining recycled wood fibres with an adhesive system that minimises the use of fossil-based raw materials.”
As part of its sustainable growth strategy, Sonae Arauco is committed to 100% responsible wood sourcing and a consistent circular economy. The percentage of recycled wood in its products is gradually increasing, with some ranges of particleboard containing more than 70% recycled material. The company aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2040 (scopes 1 and 2).
Innovus with new features
In addition to BioReFiber X, Sonae Arauco will present new features in the Innovus collection at SICAM, namely an exclusive ‘Grace’ texture and four new wood decors. Under the motto ‘Design that breathes. Wood that whispers stories’, Sonae Arauco ensures with these developments a perfect combination of texture and decorative design in a premium product.
At SICAM, visitors can explore the ‘Innovus – Matching our nature – New 2025’ collection, as well as new highlights from the Innovus Artwork Collection. Both collections offer the furniture industry, architects, designers and product developers versatile opportunities to create furniture and spaces that harmoniously combine design, sustainability and timeless elegance.
